| Hello Everyone!! We hope you are having a fabulous month of March. We have been busy, busy, busy, filling your orders, communicating with our artisans in Zimbabwe, looking for new artisans and trying to spread the word about our social enterprise. It's been crazy but a great deal of fun! Events/Media During the month of February we held a showcase of our Shona sculpture, Afrobags, and sadza batik place mats at Afroart-Designs which is a tasteful and colorful retail store selling African art and crafts from all over the continent. The store is located in Brooklyn, New York, & in true Brooklyn style there was a live jazz band, food, drinks and a lot of people ready to party with a purpose!! Many thanks to those Tashanda customers who came to support us, and to those of you who missed out, we look forward to seeing you next time! During March 2008 we got our first bit of media attention from an online magazine called Handbag Designer 101 where we were featured as the Handbag Designer of the Day!! Yeah, we were pretty excited! We also encourage you to read Lisa Shepard's new Book "On The Go" which is a book about contemporary African crafts, including Tashanda's sadza batik. Lisa, who has been featured on HGTV (Home & Garden Television), has some great projects for those of you who love crafts and have no clue about how to make them. We have plenty of fabric available, even if it is not displayed on the website. All you have to do is ask! On March 8 it was International Women's Day. This is a day which is taken very seriously across Zimbabwe and numerous events took place to mark the occasion. The largest, most notable gathering was at the Zimbabwe National Art Gallery where over 300 men and women converged to celebrate women. Included at the exhibition were some of the sculptures by Colleen Madamombe, a prominent female Shona stone sculptor who creates sculptures about women only, and mirrors the role played by women in society and motherhood. The Association of Women's Clubs, which supports over 3000 women's groups held a series of workshops and events in both urban and rural communities to remind women about their rights and to encourage them to seek income generating ventures for themselves and their families. The 9th Annual Run for Zimbabwe Orphans and Zimbabwean Fair will be taking place on April 6, 2008. Tashanda will be donating Batsiranai Dolls to this very worthy cause. The web site is: www.ZimbabweParaguay.org New Products! Afrobags We have new Afrobags. This time in the form of ladies WALLETS!! They're big enough to use as a clutch, and with enough space for all your credit cards. Check out the sample below: Shona Stone We have re-connected with a stone sculptor we had lost touch with several years ago. He is a young man names Wimbai Ngoma, and he is creating some amazing Shona stone sculpture. We have added him to our web pages as a featured Shona stone sculptor and his catalog can be viewed at http://www.tashanda.com/WimbaiNgoma.html Tashanda Blogspot Lastly, our blogspot has been updated again. This month we talk about poverty in Africa and Zimbabwe in particular. We've challenged our fellow Africans to do what they can to help pull the entire continent out of poverty, and refrain from waiting for donors. This blog, titled "The Birth of the Afrobag" is the first in a series of articles about how Tashanda is playing its own party to contribute to the elimination of global poverty, starting with Zimbabwe. Enjoy the rest of your month! Best regards Tashanda Staff |
